So, the beginning of October arrives and we start folding away the garden furniture and sticking the barbecue back in the garden shed. Another summer over with months of cold and rain to look forward to. But we still can’t use our hosepipes?

Well, we’ve finally decided to turn off the forums on this site due to the tiny amount of interest it had generated. We’re also getting an increasing amount of spammers posting rubbish on the forums, so all in all it’s becoming more work than it’s worth.

Forget Roses – Grow a Cactus

Environment Minister Ian Pearson is set to warn us all this week what we already knew – British summers are getting hotter and drier. Therefore our gardens need to adapt. Instead of thirsty herbaceous borders and other traditional plants we will need to follow the lead of our Mediterranean neighbours and start planting species more suited to the drying conditions.

Offices waste 310 million litres a day during hosepipe ban

Apparently this is “Water at work week” something I wasn’t aware of until reading it on the Envirowise website this morning. Anyway, the punchline to their week is that businesses are wasting 310 million litres of water every working day, whilst millions of us endure a hosepipe ban.

They say office workers use as much as 35 litres per day each – 86% from flushing the toilet and suggest businesses stick a litre bottle of water in toilet cisterns to save a fifth of the water wasted every day. They also suggest other ways businesses can save water on their website.

When is a ban not a ban?

When you don’t get in trouble for ignoring it.

So what’s the point of having a hosepipe ban when those who are caught flouting the rules simply get a letter of warning from the water company involved? This is what is happening. For instance, Thames Water has sent out 2900 letters warning people who have been reported by neighbours for ignoring the rules since the ban started in April. I’m sure they were really scared.

I’ve just been reading that 20% of clean water that enters your house goes down the toilet. Then I read this figure could in fact be up to 50%. Wow! That’s a lot of precious water going to waste. So what can we do about it?

Ofwat says overall leakage is down

Yesterday Ofwat published leakage data covering the year 2005/06. They state that leakage in England and Wales fell by 20 million litres per day during that period. “Most of the 22 companies met or performed better than the target set for 2005-06 by the water industry regulator.” they said.
However, four companies failed miserably to meet their targets, with (surprise surprise) Thames Water and Severn Trent Water being singled out as the poorest performers. United Utilites and Southern Water also joined them in the high wasters category.
